🌿 Pilea ‘Silver Ellen’
Botanical name: Pilea cadierei ‘Ellen’ / ‘Ellen Silver’
Common names: Silver Plated Pilea, Silver Aluminum Plant
Family: Urticaceae
Pilea ‘Silver Ellen’ is a compact, bushy houseplant prized for its metallic silver foliage. Its textured leaves have a striking silver appearance that really catches the light, making it an excellent tabletop or shelf plant.
☀️ Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal.
Can tolerate medium light, but the silver colouring is strongest with good indirect light.
Avoid hot direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the foliage.
💧 Water
Water when the top 2–3 cm (about 1 inch) of soil feels dry.
Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain.
Don't allow the plant to sit in soggy soil—Pilea is susceptible to root rot.
💦 Humidity
Enjoys moderate to higher humidity.
Average household humidity is generally acceptable, but it will appreciate a humidifier or placement near other plants.
🌡️ Temperature
Prefers warm indoor temperatures around 18–25°C (65–77°F).
Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below about 10–15°C.
🌱 Soil
Use a light, well-draining houseplant mix. A combination of regular potting soil with perlite and/or fine orchid bark works well.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer about once a month during active growth. Reduce or stop feeding during winter.
✂️ Pruning & Growth
‘Silver Ellen’ naturally grows compact and bushy. Pinching the growing tips encourages branching and keeps the plant full rather than leggy.
🐛 Common Problems
Watch for:
Pest
Yellow leaves from excessive watering
Leggy growth from insufficient light
🐾 Pet friendly: It is commonly listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs.
⭐ Care level: Easy — a great choice for adding silvery foliage and texture to a houseplant collection.
