🌿 Hardy Pitcher Plant – Nepenthes × ‘Purpurea’
Nepenthes × ‘Purpurea’ is a fascinating carnivorous pitcher plant valued for its colorful, squat pitchers and relatively adaptable nature. It produces modified leaves that form pitchers capable of trapping and digesting insects.
☀️ Light: Bright, indirect light to gentle direct morning sun. Strong afternoon sun through glass can scorch the pitchers.
💧 Water: Keep the growing medium evenly moist but not waterlogged. Use distilled, reverse-osmosis, or rainwater to avoid mineral buildup.
🌱 Soil: Use a very airy, nutrient-poor carnivorous plant mix, such as long-fiber sphagnum with perlite. Never use regular potting soil.
💦 Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is preferred. Good airflow is important to prevent fungal issues.
🌡️ Temperature: Prefers warm conditions, generally around 18–29°C (65–85°F). Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
🪲 Feeding: The pitchers naturally capture insects. If kept indoors, you can occasionally provide a small insect, but avoid overfeeding. Never add fertilizer directly to the pitchers.
🪴 Growth: Unlike many tropical Nepenthes, this type can be more tolerant of a wider range of conditions. Provide a hanging basket or support as the vines develop.
✂️ Maintenance: Remove dead pitchers and leaves with clean scissors. Avoid cutting healthy pitchers simply because they have stopped trapping insects.
