Tradescantia spathacea, commonly called Rhoeo, Moses-in-the-Cradle, or Oyster Plant, is a compact, easy-care tropical plant with upright, sword-shaped leaves. The leaves are typically green on top with rich purple undersides, creating a striking two-tone appearance.
☀️ Light: Bright, indirect light to several hours of gentle direct sun. More light generally helps maintain the purple coloration.
💧 Water: Allow the top 2–5 cm of soil to dry before watering. Avoid constantly wet soil, which can lead to root rot.
🌱 Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. A standard houseplant mix amended with perlite works well.
💦 Humidity: Average household humidity is usually fine, although it appreciates moderate humidity.
🌡️ Temperature: Keep warm, ideally 18–29°C (65–85°F). Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below about 10°C (50°F).
🪴 Growth: Forms a dense, upright rosette and can produce offsets around the base. It stays relatively compact, making it excellent for windowsills, shelves, and tabletop displays.
🌸 Flowers: Small white flowers may appear tucked between the colorful boat-shaped bracts, giving rise to the name Moses-in-the-Cradle.
✂️ Propagation: Easily propagated by separating offsets or by stem cuttings.
⭐ Difficulty: Easy
🌿 Growth habit: Upright, clumping
☀️ Best light: Bright indirect to gentle direct light
🐾 Pet safety: Considered potentially irritating/toxic if eaten, so keep away from pets and children.
