🌿 Snake Plant ‘Fernwood’ / ‘Mikado’
Dracaena angolensis ‘Fernwood’, commonly sold as Snake Plant ‘Fernwood’ or ‘Mikado’, is a striking, low-maintenance succulent with tall, narrow, cylindrical green leaves. Its upright, architectural growth makes it an excellent choice for modern spaces and small areas.
☀️ Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal, but it tolerates lower light. A few hours of gentle direct sun can encourage stronger growth.
💧 Water: Let the soil dry completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain. Reduce watering during winter.
🌱 Soil: Use a very well-draining cactus or succulent mix. A pot with drainage holes is essential.
💦 Humidity: Average household humidity is perfect. It does not require high humidity.
🌡️ Temperature: Prefers 18–29°C (65–85°F). Protect from cold temperatures and drafts.
🪴 Growth: Upright and clumping, with narrow, pointed leaves that grow vertically from the base. It is generally slower growing than many tropical houseplants.
✂️ Propagation: Easily propagated by division or leaf cuttings, although division is preferred for maintaining the ‘Fernwood’ growth form.
⚠️ Common mistake: Overwatering is the biggest risk. If you're unsure whether to water, it's usually safer to wait until the soil is completely dry.
⭐ Difficulty: Very easy
🌿 Growth habit: Upright, clumping
☀️ Best light: Bright indirect light
💧 Water: Allow soil to dry completely
🐾 Pet safety: Toxic if chewed/ingested, particularly to cats and dogs.
